FULL MOON PUPPET SHOW WORKSHOP: Make it Pop! A Dive into the World of Blacklight Puppetry

Blacklight, or ultraviolet light, is one way to make a BIG impact relatively simply. In our Blacklight Lab, we will experiment with materials that glow and materials that hide the glow. We will explore the range of visual spectacles blacklight can provide us with, the materials and equipment needed, and tricks and tips for building and performing a piece that will leave audiences gasping in amazement.

Required Materials/Prep
Please be sure to assemble this list of materials in advance of the scheduled workshop session.

  • UV Blacklight—any type will do
We recommend getting a cheap flashlight or keychain blacklight to test materials with. We will cover pros & cons of different types of fixtures, and bulbs available.

  • A room that can get dark
The darker the room, the better the effect!

  • Range of fluorescent materials that have been tested and proved to glow using your blacklight.

  • Paper, fabric, string, ribbon, pipe cleaners, tape, paint, random stuff from your kitchen drawer, etc. Have fun exploring and collecting! The more you find, the more you will be able to explore!

  • Black fabric
Ideally, a variety of sizes and types to experiment with.

  • Black foam core

  • Black Sharpie marker

  • Bamboo skewers or wooden dowels

  • Black tape

  • Newspaper
